Hai Kang Life Releases a MOBILE FIELD UNIT for Infectious Diseases

Hai Kang Life Corporation Limited (HKLife) has announced the availability of a MOBILE FIELD UNIT for rapid Point-of-Care deployment. The Mobile Field Unit will be showcased for the first time at Bio2009 in Atlanta, Georgia (May 18-21, Booth H2249).

Winning the war against the global spread of infectious diseases demands the appropriate biotechnology-based solutions in the right place at the right time. HKLife can now deliver sensitive and accurate diagnostic capabilities to resource-limited urban, rural and remote locations where access to conventional clinical laboratories may be precluded. No more waiting for results from samples dispatched to a centralized laboratory, HKLife・s MOBILE FIELD UNIT will enable the rapid deployment of molecular diagnostic tools for pre-emptive surveillance, high-throughput screening and pandemic crisis management. The MOBILE FIELD UNIT provides a comprehensive self-contained diagnostics laboratory, packed into a portable and ruggedized carrying case containing all the necessary materials, equipment and consumables for rapid and accurate diagnosis of infectious diseases in animal or human samples.
HKLife・s MOBILE FIELD UNIT is available with a choice of technology platforms, either NASBA-EOC (enzyme-linked oligonucleotide capture) or a recently developed, patented and validated NASBA-POC (point-of-care) molecular diagnostics technology. Convenient, reliable and specific amplification of the target RNA is achieved under isothermal conditions, alleviating the requirement for thermo-cycling. Combined with a simple optical method of detection that does not require complex fluorescence equipment, the system offers sensitivity comparable to Real-Time PCR.
The MOBILE FIELD UNIT contains all materials and equipment necessary to perform a diagnostic measurement within a rural clinical setting or in a remote field location. This self-contained unit includes a NASBA-EOC or NASBA-POC diagnostic test kit, specific to a variety of animal and human diseases; heating block, centrifuge and UV light source; sufficient reagents, pipettes and consumables required for multiple testing; packed into a ruggedized case that can be hand-carried to the point-of-care.

Professor Albert Yu, Chairman and CEO of HKLife commented :Time is one of the most critical factors to control spreading of a disease. The availability of this MOBILE FIELD UNIT provides an effective tool for medical professional to carry out on-site testing and diagnosis, enabling appropriate isolation and treatment without being delayed by having to send samples to a centralized laboratory;. :The HKLife Mobile Field Unit fulfills the ASSURED criteria, guidelines set by the WHO, referring to Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and Robust, laboratory Equipment free and Deliverable to the low-resource setting, as being the ideal diagnostics technology;, added Dr. Terence Lau, the company COO.
Since its establishment in 1999, HKLife has been performing extensive research on infectious diseases, with many publications in major peer-reviewed journals. It has also developed and been granted patents in virus detection systems for pathogens such as AIV, foot-and-mouth disease, SARS-CoV and classical swine fever, all of which are highly contagious diseases, some being transmissible to humans. Influenza pandemics must be taken very seriously because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world. In rapid response to the current potential pandemic outbreak of Swine Flu, now being recognized as Influenza A/H1N1, a new range of molecular diagnostic test kits has just been launched.
HKLife is committed to revolutionize the practice of clinical diagnostics, providing effective platforms for point-of-care applications. HKLife has available three diagnostic technology platforms for infectious disease detection: VDS NASBA (EOC or POC), VetDetect and VetScreen. All three platforms are highly sensitive and specific, giving rapid and accurate results within 2-4 hours. The availability of the MOBILE FIELD UNIT now extends HKLife・s diagnostic technology capabilities to comprehensively serve the needs of the remote community.
