Prof. Albert C.H. YU, BSc, MSc, PhD

After receiving his BSc, MSc and PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, Prof. Yu moved to the University of California at San Francisco and subsequently spent four years at Stanford University and was honored with the status of Visiting Associate Professor. Upon returning to Hong Kong, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as a faculty member. Prof. Yu has also spent time as a guest professor at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, visiting professor at The First Military Medical University and visiting investigator at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over his academic and research career, Prof. Yu has published and edited 5 books and over 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and conference papers. He is also the co-inventor of numerous technologies with 59 patents granted and others pending.

Dr. Terence L. T. LAU is the Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer of Hai Kang Life Corporation Limited, Hong Kong’s leading biotechnology company in developing innovative molecular-based diagnostic technologies, products and services of premium quality to ensure the biological health and safety worldwide. He oversees all areas of company operations from research and development to commercialization of molecular diagnostics including the latest patented biochip system for clinical, veterinary and food testing applications.

Dr. Lau earned his B. Sc. (Hon) in Animal and Plant Biotechnology from the University of Hong Kong, followed by M. Phil. in Biology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Peking University, China. He also holds a Diploma in Marketing from Hong Kong Institute of Marketing.

Dr. Lau started his professional career in a marketing role based in the regional headquarters of a multinational company. In 1997 his entrepreneurial drive and vision led him to become the founding member and key executive of two Hong Kong biotechnology companies focusing on developing advanced technologies for health care settings. The principle focus that lies at the core of Dr Lau’s mission is transforming knowledge into innovative, practical and user-friendly products. Dr. Lau’s leadership, firsthand knowledge in the diagnostic market and well-established connections in the medical, food and agricultural industry has attracted frequent consultation from commercial and government sectors, and various organizations including World Health Organization and United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Dr. Lau is currently an Advisor of Infectious Disease Centre of Peking University, Adjunct Investigator of Jilin Academy of Agricultural Science. He is also appointed as a committee member of National Committee on Biometrology of P.R. China, the official council responsible for establishing metrological standards. Dr. Lau actively serves the industry with his professional knowledge and international experience. He is a committee member of Analytical Laboratory Accreditation Criteria Committee (ALACC) of AOAC International in the United States and the Executive Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization (HKBIO). He has also been appointed as an Assessor for the Small Enterprise Research Assistant Programme (SERAP) of the Innovation and Technology Fund of HKSAR Government. He has co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and Nature Biotechnology, and is the co-inventor of over 30 patents granted in United States, Europe, China and other countries.

Dr. Lau is the recipient of several prestigious awards including 2008 Beijing Municipal Technology Award from Beijing Municipal Government and 2006 Chinese Medical and Technological Award from Chinese Medical Association.
